What is the purpose of the multiplication tables check?

The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

The MTC is statutory for all year 4 pupils in England

How will children be assessed?

The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Your child will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check, and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. We have been practising in class on Multiplication Tables Check – Mathsframe

Pupils will input their answers using a keyboard or a touchscreen. We have been practising on both.

When will children be assessed?

Schools have a 3-week check window from the 6th June – 24th June  to administer the MTC. We are aiming to do them between 13th and the 17th June
